Our brains are designed to keep us safe. When we experience prolonged stress, trauma, or illness, the brain can get stuck in a chronic “survival mode,” even when no real danger is present.

This overactivation of the limbic system—the part of the brain responsible for processing emotions, memories, and survival instincts—can lead to a cascade of nervous system dysregulation, physical symptoms, and chronic health challenges.

Any isolated or combined trauma—whether physical, emotional, or environmental—can overload the brain. Once we reach a tipping point, the brain’s basic survival mechanisms become overstimulated.

This protective state, originally meant to be temporary, can become chronically engaged, physically altering the structure and function of the limbic system. As a result, the brain gets stuck in a high-alert response (also called limbic system impairment), triggering an exaggerated immune, endocrine, and autonomic nervous system response, even when no immediate threat is present.

Consequently, this cross-wiring of neural circuits sends false threat messages throughout the body, keeping it trapped in a fight, flight, or freeze state. This primitive defense system releases a never-ending stream of stress hormones (such as cortisol, adrenaline and norepinephrine), shifting the body out of a state of recovery, growth, and repair and into one of shutdown and survival.

Do You Have Any of These Symptoms?

Because the nervous system regulates nearly every process in the body, chronic dysregulation can contribute to a wide range of symptoms, including:

  • Cognitive & Emotional Symptoms: Anxiety, depression, brain fog, intrusive thoughts, memory issues, emotional reactivity
  • Sensory & Neurological Symptoms: Sensitivities to sound, light, chemicals, foods, or electromagnetic fields (EMFs); chronic pain syndromes (such as fibromyalgia); dizziness, tinnitus, or migraines
  • Digestive Issues: IBS, SIBO, chronic bloating, food intolerances, nausea, slow digestion
  • Endocrine & Hormonal Symptoms: Chronic fatigue, thyroid imbalances, blood sugar instability, adrenal dysfunction
  • Immune & Inflammatory Symptoms: Autoimmune conditions, histamine intolerance, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS), frequent infections, long COVID
  • Cardiovascular & Autonomic Symptoms: Heart palpitations, POTS, dysautonomia, temperature dysregulation
  • Detoxification & Metabolic Issues: Chemical sensitivities, difficulty detoxing, sluggish liver function
  • Reproductive & Sexual Health: Low libido, irregular menstrual cycles, hormonal imbalances

If you experience a mix of these symptoms and traditional treatments haven’t provided relief, nervous system dysregulation and limbic system impairment may be underlying factors.

The good news? The brain is adaptable, and brain retraining programs help rewire these faulty pathways to restore balance.

How Brain Retraining Works

Brain retraining programs use neuroplasticity-based techniques to help shift the brain out of survival mode and reestablish healthier responses. Through visualization, cognitive reframing, movement, mindfulness, and somatic exercises, these programs teach the brain to interpret stimuli appropriately instead of through a chronic stress lens.

Below are three leading brain retraining programs we often recommend:

The Gupta Program

Developed by Ashok Gupta, The Gupta Program is rooted in meditation, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP), and mindfulness techniques to help rewire limbic system overactivation. The Gupta Program is particularly beneficial for conditions like chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), long COVID, mold illness, fibromyalgia, and dysautonomia.

Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS)

Annie Hopper’s Dynamic Neural Retraining System focuses on visualization, movement, and emotional reprocessing to shift the brain’s response to triggers. It is widely used for conditions such as multiple chemical sensitivity (MCS), chronic pain, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS), anxiety, and persistent inflammation syndromes.

Primal Trust

Primal Trust by Cathleen King combines brain retraining with trauma healing and somatic regulation, incorporating attachment work, nervous system education, and embodiment practices. This program is especially helpful for those with chronic illness, nervous system dysregulation, complex PTSD, and post-viral syndromes.

Which Program is Right for You?

Each of these programs offers a unique approach, but they all share the goal of helping the brain rewire maladaptive patterns and restore health. Some individuals resonate more with the structure of DNRS, while others prefer the mindfulness approach of Gupta or the deeper trauma work of Primal Trust.

Debbie has taken both DNRS and Primal Trust while Roy has experience with Gupta. Please speak with us at your next appointment if you are interested in learning more. And if you do enroll in any of these programs, we’d love to hear about your experience!

While brain retraining can be transformative, commitment, patience, and consistency are key. Healing is a journey, and retraining the brain is a powerful step toward breaking free from chronic symptoms and reclaiming well-being.

About Debbie Steinbock, HHC

After years of being told that she had an "incurable" chronic health condition, Debbie turned to her diet to help her understand her disease, restore her body, and regain control of her health. Her personal journey has given her the knowledge and compassion necessary to help her clients take an active role in their own healing. Since starting her practice in 2000, Debbie has successfully helped hundreds of people across the country to improve their diet, enhance their current state of health, and eliminate a variety of health conditions.
