Did you know that about 80% of your immune cells are located in your gastrointestinal tract?

This means that the health of your gut is closely linked to immune function.

Intestinal permeability, also known as “leaky gut,” refers to a condition in which the lining of the intestine becomes more permeable, allowing substances to leak through into the bloodstream.

As an analogy, think about tea leaves in a tea bag. The holes in the material of the tea bag are so tiny that the tea leaves stay inside but the flavor is still able to steep through.

Ideally, this is the same concept that should happen within our gut. In a healthy gut, these junctions should remain tight.

However, several things can go wrong that cause our guts to become imbalanced, irritated and inflamed. This inflammatory process breaks open the tight junctions causing the gut to become “leaky.”

It’s as if the fabric of the tea bag gets torn open and we find the tea leaves in our mug—where they don’t belong!

Leaky gut can lead to inflammation and immune system activation, which leads to the production of autoantibodies – antibodies produced by the immune system that attack the body’s own tissue – which in turn can contribute to the onset of autoimmune disease.

It is easy to make the connection between the gut and the development of digestive conditions such as food allergies, Celiac disease, Crohn’s Disease, and Ulcerative Colitis.

However, these autoantibodies can also travel through the bloodstream and affect joints, organs and tissue anywhere in the body.

This is why it is believed that most autoimmune conditions – such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Type 1 Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis – actually start in the gut!

Healing your gut is the first step to healing autoimmune disease!

You can heal your gut through dietary changes, supplements, and other interventions aimed at restoring the balance of bacteria in the gut and reducing inflammation.

Additionally, elemental diets can be transformative for those who have struggled with autoimmune conditions and have not found relief with other treatments!

WHAT IS AN ELEMENTAL DIET?

An elemental diet is a liquid diet that contains all the essential amino acids, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals that your body will need.

Elemental diets are usually consumed as a sole source of nutrition for a period of time, which can range from a few days to a few weeks.

The anti-inflammatory nature of elemental diets rests the digestive system and allows the intestines to heal, getting to the root-cause of many conditions.
