Have you ever wondered why it sometimes feels like your body is working against you?
Maybe you’re eating the “right” foods, taking supplements, living a healthy lifestyle, and yet your digestion is still off, your energy is drained, or you’re reacting to foods you once tolerated with ease.
It’s frustrating. It’s confusing. And it can feel like your body is betraying you.
But here’s the truth: you’re not broken and your body isn’t failing you. In fact, it’s doing exactly what it was designed to do—keep you alive.
As I’ve written before, your nervous system is always asking one fundamental question: Am I safe? Because the reality is, your body is not wired for wellbeing. It’s wired for survival.
Until we understand this and learn how to work with our biology instead of against it, healing often feels like an uphill battle.
The Biology of Survival
From an evolutionary standpoint, your body’s top priority is to keep you alive.
That means when your brain perceives a threat—whether you encounter a rattlesnake on your hike or receive a stressful email—your autonomic nervous system kicks into high gear. This “fight-or-flight” response is designed to help you escape danger, conserve energy, and protect your vital systems.
However, in this hypervigilant state, your body is not focused on healing. It’s focused on getting you through that moment.
From your body’s perspective, functions like digestion, hormone regulation, detoxification, and immune balance are non-essential during a crisis. These systems are designed to pause until the threat has passed.
But here’s the problem: in our modern world, that sense of danger rarely turns off. Chronic stressors keep the system on high alert, leaving your body stuck in survival mode.
These stressors aren’t always obvious. They can include things like:
- Skipping meals or riding the blood sugar rollercoaster
- Burning the candle at both ends with too little sleep
- Constant notifications, emails, and digital overload
- Rushing through the day without breaks to rest or breathe
- Overexercising or under-fueling in the name of “health”
- Inflammatory foods, caffeine crashes, and alcohol
- Restrictive or obsessive health routines that add pressure rather than ease
- Emotional stress from work, relationships, caregiving, financial uncertainty and unresolved trauma
- Local and global stressors (like pandemics, mass shootings, wildfires, hate crimes and political unrest) that keep you on edge
Your nervous system interprets all of these as potential threats. And when they stack up over time, your body never gets the signal that it’s safe to shift into healing mode.
And in survival mode, healing becomes almost impossible.
When Survival Mechanisms Backfire
The very systems designed to protect you can become the root of dysfunction when left unchecked:
Inflammation is a life-saving response to injury or infection. But chronic inflammation drives nearly every modern illness, from digestive disorders to autoimmune diseases.
Food sensitivities often reflect an over-vigilant immune system that’s trying to keep you “safe” but ends up limiting your diet, creating nutrient deficiencies, and impairing your quality of life.
Digestive shutdown during stress is a normal biological response. But when stress becomes constant, your gut may never fully “turn back on” which means your body struggles to absorb nutrients, eliminate waste, and maintain balance.
Autoimmunity can be viewed as a case of mistaken identity—your immune system trying so hard to protect you that it ends up attacking your own tissues.
These are not failures. They are overreactions of a system stuck in survival mode.
Creating Healing Conditions
Healing begins when we shift out of survival and into a state of safety. When your body finally says, “It’s okay now. I can rest. I can repair.”
In my practice, I help clients create these healing conditions through a personalized, mind-body approach. This often includes:
- Nourishing the body with anti-inflammatory, nutrient-dense, unprocessed foods
- Identifying and reducing hidden stressors—like blood sugar instability, microbial and hormonal imbalances, or over-restrictive diets
- Balancing the immune system gently, especially in autoimmune and allergic conditions
- Supporting the nervous system with tools like restorative sleep, breathwork, journaling, somatic therapies, and calming routines
This is where transformation begins. Not through force, but through safety.
After Safety Comes Wellbeing
When your body feels safe, it can do what it was always meant to do: digest, detoxify, regulate, reproduce, and repair.
Healing is not about fighting your body. It’s about listening to it. Respecting its design. And helping it shift from survival to safety.
Because it’s only after safety that wellbeing becomes possible.
If this resonates with you, and you’re ready to help your body shift from survival mode into a state of healing and balance, I invite you to learn more about our services and schedule an appointment with Debbie.
